BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH OF GENERAL

Robert Henry KirkwoodWhiteley was born near Cambridge, Maryland. He was appointed to the United StatesMilitary Academy from the State of Delaware and graduated in 1830. Upon hisgraduation, he was assigned to the 2nd. Artillery. During this assignment, heserved in various arsenals and garrisons including Fort Moultrie, SouthCarolina in 1832 - 1833, which was at the time of the \'nullification troubles\'.

On December 28, 1855 he was promotedto First Lieutenant and later, on July 19, 1836, was brevetted Captain forgallant conduct during the Florida war.

In 1838, he was transferred to theOrdinance Department. In 1842 he was promoted to Captain. He commanded thearsenal at Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the arsenal at St. Louis, Missouri, the NewYork Ordinance Depot, and the arsenal at San Antonio, Texas, which command heheld until the arsenal was seized by the state of Texas early in 1861 upon it\'ssecession from the Union. He was promoted to Major on August 3, 1861,Lieutenant Colonel on June 1, 1863, and Colonel on April 6, 1866. During theCivil War, he commanded the New York arsenal until 1862. He was then givencommand of the arsenal at Allegheny, Pennsylvania, which post he held until hisretirement from active service on April 14, 1875. He was brevetted BrigadierGeneral on March 13, 1865.
