Excellent Quality Civil War
Quarter Plate Tintype Image
Member Of The 34th Indiana Infantry
\"Morton Rifles\"
Wearing Distinctive Zouave-Style Uniform!
Regiment Fought Last Battle Of The War At Palmito Ranch! Here is a great looking image of a soldier from a distinctive and historically significant Civil War regiment. What we offer here is this knockout quality quarter plate tintype featuring a uniformed member of the 34th Indiana Infantry. Also known as the \"Morton Rifles\", they were named for Indiana Governor Oliver P. Morton, a staunch supporter of Abraham Lincoln. The 34th Indiana was known for their distinctive Zouave-style uniform, which you can see our young soldier is proudly wearing here for the camera. The unique jacket of this regiment is dark blue with an integrated sky blue color false vest, and was emblazoned with the unique small trefoils at each side. The image is VERY crisp and clean, and comes housed in a nice leather/wood full quarter plate size case with brass hinges and push button latch. The case shows only some minor external wear (see pics).

The 34th Indiana distinguished itself throughout the Civil War, having the distinction of never losing an engagement save for their last one, which also happened to be the last action of the war, on May 12-13, 1865...the Battle of Palmito Ranch near Brownsville, Texas (and that was a Rebel victory only in the technical sense; though the Confederates pushed back Union forces the second day, they surrendered their forces a short time thereafter). Private John J. Williams of the 34th Indiana was the last soldier who died in the battle, making him the last soldier to die in the Civil War.
