original Civil Warletterdated Camp Parapet Carrollton Louisiana July 23, 1862. Some of the writing is hard to read I translated the best I could. The letter reads:

My Dear Abbie,

I find myself with pen in hand again to address youa few lines.................Your Granfather thinks that the war will last 3 years if not longer. I think that the present appearances are not so favorable as they have been and if McClellan is not successful at Richmond the war will be prolonged for some time...........Every climate has its Malidies......the people of New Orelans in emegrating north fear as much the Consumption as we do.................Our Colonel was detailed today to go home to Maine and recruit men for his Regiment it will probably be the last of our Colonel. Our Lieut Colonel has permitted to recruit in New Orleans or Carrollton for the Regiment a privaledge which the General would not grant Mcclusky..................Thomas H. Wentworth
