An original Civil War letter dated Philadelphia Sept 28/62, Philadelphia is in Pennsylvania. Some ofthe writing is a little hard to read, I translated the best I could. The letter reads:

My Dear Son

Our anxiety was very mutch relieved this morning by receiving a letter from you leaving bearing date the 23d.............we are very mutch gratified to know that you are safe and in good health you have had some eventful times...........as several people had received letters from the Regement it looked as if something had happened to both you and Thompson and we are thankful that you are safe poor John Lingo he was brought to the Hospital at Broad & Cherry yesterday having had a very bad fall at Sheppardstown and as subsequently proved a bad case of Rupture his Mother is with him..............I am in hopes of being able to give you more particulars of Johnny the next time I write I think you must have heard how his Regement the Corn Exchange was cut up at Sheppardstown it was a second Balls Bluff.
