original Civil Warletterwritten by a soldier named William. It is dated Picket Station New Bern Sept. 5th 1862, New Bern is in North Carolina. Some of the writing is hard to read I translated the best I could. The letter reads:

Dear Friend,

I have been quite unwell since I last wrote to you...........My health has returned to me again or enough that I am doing duty............We like our new officers first rate they are all new Capt. Otis, First Lieu S.L. White, second lieu W.H. Marshall, promoted from orderly. there has been no other promotions.................It is a nice evening, Yes the moon shine very brighlty yes very bright indeed. this afternoon for the first time since we have been out on picket this time I got off for a good ramble but could not find any thing but I had a good time tomorrow we return to camp our regiment is to be relieved by the twenty fourth Mass. So I suppose we shall not go on picket again at has wear and stain marks, some of the writing is light in you have any questions feel free to ask. Thank you for looking.
