An original Civil War letter dated Camp Ray Memphis June 28th 1864. This is a partial letter and is missing the last part. Some of the writing is hard to read. In one area it looks like the writer says, Another day numbered with the past and no sound of the long roll has summoned us into line of battle Our pickets are occassionaly fired upon but the rebels though strong dare not disturb a City held by Forty thousand Union soldiers Genl Smith led out on Tuesday last a force of about Twenty thousand to retrieve the misfortune of our troops under Sturgis. The weather is a little uncomfortably warm...............arrived at Alton about 11 PM of the 15th Joliet, Springfield & Bloomington were the largest places......Every little farm house in Illinois sent its best looking inmates \"to the front\" & they encouraged us by waving handkerchiefs and even the sound of their feminine voices could be heard above the rattle of the cars as they cheered & offer us God\'s speed & a safe has wear and stain marks, and as previously noted this is a partial letter.
