original Civil Warletterincluding the cover written by a soldier named John who was in the 14th New Hampshire. The letter is dated Camp 14th NHV 1st Brig 2d Div 19th AC Halltown Va Aug. 22, 1864. Some of the writing is hard to read I translated the best I could. The letter reads:

Dear Friends atHome

We seem bound to occupy the same camp.......................My last was written near Charleston Va. Yesterday morning we got under arms & lay in line of battle all the A.M. Just after noon we moved into a new position on the crest of a hill & began to through some temporary breast works .......this occupied until nearly dark when we quit work................This morning their has been a sharp cavelry skirmish in our view the guns could be heard quite plainly I presume we shall fall back on H.F................I have a good deal of confidence in Gen Sheridan...............I am glad on H\'s account that K\'s quota is so near full but it is a shame to send such drunken worthless scamps as most of them substitutes are. They will have to make a whole sale draft by & by. When we get as seriously in earnest as the rebels are then we shall conquer them. Go through their towns & you see nothing but old men & boys...........Sam Kimball came by he is in the 1st NH Cav................We had an order to fall in.........during this time our line of skirmishers in front a mile became hotly engaged with the enemy with an occasional shot from a light battery they have kept up a continual popping all day long. As I write this rifle shots over in the woods sound like corn popping in a distant room All this forenoon we were throwing up breast works formed of rail road ties stone wall & dirt. We are well defended now from any attack......................The firing tonight is much further to our right indicating that the rebs may be moving up towards has wear and stain marks and sometears, the cover has you have any questions feel free to ask. Thank you for looking. Please note I list new items every week.
