Civil War letter dated at Boonville, Missouri, Dec. 29, 1861, from Philipp Walter, tohis friend, written in German, and accompanied by a typed translation into English.

3 pgs., approx. 4-3/4\" x 7-3/4\".

Good war related content from this man who had already served 3 months in the Army, and writesthat he won\'t join the Army again, as long as he has a little work, but notes that the times are bad, with \"no money\" and \"no work\".He writes of the \"seven messengers of the City of St. Louis\", who have left Boonville; and of a friend who was in the army, but after the Battle of Springfield, his three months were up, and he \"gave up military life and is now in his old store making shoes\". More interesting content.

The translation reads:

Dear Comrade,

I have received your letter. The letter that you enclosed for your Dad, I have given to him.

I did not see any big news in your letter, except for the seven messengers of the City of St. Louis. They have left. You wanted to know if George Inbusmann is still in the Army. He is not there any more. When his three months were over after the battle of Springfield, he gave up military life and is now in his old store making shoes. If possible, he will never go back.

Boonville guard is gone and is taken over by State Miliz. Your Dad also belong to that and it is bad for an old man like your Dad to stand watch. It is bad times. No money. No work.

You wanted to know how long it has been since I heard from Germany? It is almost one year since I had a letter from my parents. I hope to hear from them within the next four or five weeks. I will write you all the news when I hear from them. It would be much better if you would be here to read the letter yourself.

My health is good and I hope the same for you. As long as I have a little work, I will not join the Army again.

Secessionisters think I am about finished in the State of Mo.

As far as I know all of your relations are well.

This letter is finished and I wish you the happiestNew Year.

Philipp Walter\"

Very Fine.
