Civil War Letters , 1863 Fort Independence, 1864 Fort Sumner, Others, Single Lot
These 5 letters were found in a Jay, Maine home. The earliest letter was written by P.L.Grindle to a friend Charles Macomber ? of Jay, Maine on Sept 18, 1863 from Fort Independence, Boston Harbor. The letter mentions his hospital stay and very light duty of sweeping out the quarters. He also mentions money matters and thieves. Writes that he is expecting to be going to Long Island for guard duty. Another letter dated Dec.12, 1863 was written by Major Phinney of Co.A- 8th Me. to a friend ,Charles Macomber, of Jay, Maine. Letter is an interesting read. It mentions girls back home, being housed in tents, drills, no fear of combat, etc. A third letter dated May 7, 1864, Fort Sumner. The letter mentions the First Maine in Maraland, (his spelling). He writes by listing things in 9 paragraphs describing what he sees, hears and experiences. This letter must have had another attachment as there is no closure on this single- two sided page. Also,there is no writer identity. Fourth letter, La. Morganya's Band, dated June 23,1864 by J.A. Lawrence CO.? 29? Maine Regt. N.O., La. This letter was written to a Mr. C?,Davenport of Jay, Maine. See envelope July 7. Soldier talks about his illness, a negro taking his place caring for the horses, food etc. He ends his letter writing about his childhood and returning to the farm. The last letter is written by Asa Jennings, a Farmington, Maine Civil War soldier. Letter written to his wife is dated Feb. 19th/ 65-8th Division 2 A.C.. Hospital at Patrick Station. These letters are in very good overall condition. There is some light fading in places. Only 1 letter comes with an envelope. Offered without reserve as a single lot. offer with confidence.
