Written from “Camp near Hagerstown, MD. July 12, 1863”This letter was written by Pvt. Walter Cook back home to his father, Lewis E.Cook, in North Springfield, Vermont. This is 12 days after Gettysburg. He talksabout leaving Gettysburg and driving the “Rebs” out of Pennsylvania. They took the rebels pontoon bridges and theycannot cross the Potomac. “…I think they will half to all give up or else bekilled…” He was 18 years old at the time and mentions that his 9-monthenlistment will be up soon and he will be home.He enlisted on September 1, 1862. The 16th Vermont Regimentwas mustered in October 23, 1862. He was mustered out on August 10, 1863. Besidesthe Battle of Gettysburg (July 1-3) and the pursuit of General Lee (July 4-18),the regiment saw other action. A lot of information is available on theinternet about Pvt. Walter Cook and the regiment. Pvt. Cook died September 13,1863 and is buried in Pine Grove Cemetery in North Springfield, Vermont.
