About this Item:

Quarter-Plate Tintype (1855 - 1865), 19th century portrait of soldiers, vintage case, 3.25 x 4.25. A tintype photograph was created by utilizinga sheet of iron coated with enamel or a dark lacquer. Through this application, adirect positive could be made, supporting the process of photographic emulsion. Much like their predecessors, tintypes were initially made in photography studios, but quickly became mobile; it wasn't uncommon to see photographers in booths, open air markets at carnivals and fairs creating these images on the spot. This was made possible because the lacquered iron sheet did not require drying, making it possible to develop and deliver a finished image minutes after it was taken.

Featured within thisvintage case is a full-length portrait of two soldiers posing before a painted background, each donning traditional military garb and kepis. The image is framed by an embellished double-layeredgold frame, and although the front cover is missing, the verso of the back panel is fantastically-preserved, bearing an intricate vine-work design.

Amissing front cover and light surface marks andwear to the case, otherwise fine condition.
