Though resembling a Civil War era hat insignia my research indicates this is a Vintage 1872 - 1875 (post civil war period) style of U.S. Army Hunting Horn Brass Cap Pin although the style seems to be called \'civil war\' by many.Reference is made to an excellent web page on the subject, where this sale item\'s style is shown at left side of page where it can be easily differentiated from \'civil war\' era pin also shown:

This item has light patina and is in fine condition and has resided in a larger collection of pins, buttons, and medals for about 30 years.
