Dug in the vicinity of Cold Harbor, Virginia, this is the lockplate from a Union Springfield Model 1863 Rifled Musket. It is in excellent condition, save for one piece of \"battlefield damage\" which I feel makes the piece more unique than others. As visible in the second photo, the mainspring is cracked through, which would have made the whole assembly inoperable. This is most likely why the lock was discarded. Cold Harbor was the site of two fierce battles, one in 1862, and the latter in 1864. This piece would make a nice addition to any collection.
