RARE Samuel Hunt wooden hat or bonnettrunk in excellent condition! Circa 1860.Size: 13\" wide, 14\" tall, 13 1/2\" deep. A very rare size!

A beautiful example of the bonnet or hat trunks of the 1850\'s to 1860\'s. These small cube shaped trunks were typically made to carry special ladies bonnets or even men\'s top hats, gloves, scarves, and other small items.(several old trunk labels list bonnet trunks (not lingerie trunks, even if they could have been used for that too)Wealthier folks at the time would usually travel with several trunks, not just one. I don\'t get this rare type very often and this one is complete with the working lock and fancy barrel key (see pictures). The large brass buttons, brass lock plate, key, iron banding, and small iron hinges are all original. The top handle has been replaced in the original style with alligator pattern leather. The wood is solid and hand finished with tung oil finish for a beautiful antique satin finish. The wood is not brokenor cracked, and only minor age and usage marks are there as expected for a true antique. The iron barrel key has a special heart shaped bow. The interior was cleaned and finished also. There is a wonderful label in the lid from Samuel Hunt of Baltimore, who made a variety of items including trunks, bonnet trunks, saddles, buffalo robes, horse covers, etc... quite interesting! The interior tray has been covered with an early style fabric with a stars and stripes pattern. One of the most beautiful and complete hat or bonnet trunks I have had from this period, a true collector\'s piece! Museum quality and condition! This trunk is very well madeand strong.
