Hardbound, incomplete Volume 43 of THE ALBION. A BRITISH, COLONIAL, AND FOREIGN WEEKLY GAZETTE for the year 1865.The volume is in good condition, except for the boards, which are in terrible condition. The boards and what\'s left of the spine are attached to each other, but all of these are detached from the text block. The text block itself is well-bound, but missing the five issues mentioned below. Both boards are well-scuffed and worn and the spine has been torn significantly. For some reason the volume errantly has bound as HARPER\'S WEEKLY and perhaps these boards and spine were not the original boards and binding for this text block. The pages are clean, except for the occasional few issues that have at their tops someone\'s name handwritten in pencil, and occasionally there is some foxing or a small tear, but nothing egregious.A complete volume would consist of 52 weekly issues (12 pages per issue totaling 624 numbered pages), plus two unnumbered pages immediately preceding each issue, plus two unnumbered pages immediately following each issue. The volume for sale here contains 47 of these 52 issues. The unnumbered pages generally consist of advertisements almost exclusively from vendors in New York. The issues do not contain illustrations, except for those associated with the advertisements, as well as the weekly \"chess problem.\" The subject matter within each issue ranges widely, focusing upon Great Britain, its politics, its literature, music, fine arts, drama, and imperial expansion into Africa and Asia. There are frequent entries that mention what is happening in the American Civil War, particularly from a British standpoint. The volume measures about 16 inches tall, 11.25 inches wide, and two inches thick.Unfortunately, the volume is missing the first issue of the year (January 7th) and four issues that would have been published during the climax of the American Civil War, that is, the fall of Richmond, the surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia, the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, the alleged apprehension of John Wilkes Booth, and the surrender of Joseph E. Johnston, which effectively ended the Civil War. These four missing issues would have been dated April 15th, April 22nd, April 29th, and May 6th. Thus, the volume is missing pages 1 through 12 and it begins with Issue Number 2, dated January 14th. Then the volume is missing the issues from April 15th through May 6th, that is, pages 169-216. The final issue of the year, dated December 30th (Issue Number 52), appears to be complete and it is followed by the usual two pages of advertisements, as well as a blank endpage. The front of the volume does not have a blank endpage.I found several pieces of ephemera (see photograph) contained inside the volume, including a couple of photographs, a letter dated June 21, 1912, another letter dated April 10, 1917, an invitation to a Class of 1913 \"hop\" on December 13, 1912, and an advertisement card from the White Sewing Machine Company in Cleveland, Ohio. The letters also are addressed to someone in Cleveland. The purchase price includes the cost of insured USPS Media shipping to a destination within the United States.
