I have went through this item several times and will include as much info as I could gather.
This was a soldier in the Union Army named Franklin Barnhart.
He claimed to have been drafted from Somerset county, Somerset Township, Pa. On October 16, 1862.
I guess they sold they 1863 diaries ahead of time in 1862 because he starts posting in the middle of the diary on the same day he said he was drafted but in 1863... he doesn\'t post daily at this point, and within 5 or 6 posts is up to his first actual dated post on 12/1/1862, which he wrote in the spot for 10/23/1863....eventually once it turns 1863 he goes back to the beginning of the diary and starts posting chronologically from there.
The diary consists of him discussing the weather, living conditions, or lack there of, reviews he received from General Foster in Suffolk, Va., building bridges, activities of the other men, fights and more.
After doing research the only General Foster I could locate in the Suffolk area was Robert Sanford Foster who was General there during the \"Siege of Suffolk\"
The last post says something about him turning in his guns. It appears that what I can only assume is his children got a hold of the diary at some point because some of the pages that were not filled out by the soldier have children\'s writing on it with other names like George Barnhart dated in 1864, where the best I can tell is the child is pretending and mimicking posts of the soldier, talking about the weather and just randomness.
I just opened it up and took random pictures of random pages, the condition can be determined by you looking at the many pictures I am posting. If you have any questions feel free to ask.
