Clarence Darrow was known as a sophisticated country lawyer,whose his wit made him one of the most famous U.S. lawyers. Darrow is well known and famous for two ofhis cases (amongst many others). Thefirst case was defending Leopold and Loeb in their 1924 murder trial forkilling 14 year-old Robert Franks. The secondcase was the Scopes \"Monkey\" Trial in 1925, in which he opposedWilliam Jennings Bryan.

Leopold and Loeb were two wealthy students at the Universityof Chicago, who kidnapped and murdered Robert Franks. They thought that they could carry out the perfectcrime. This 1924 murder wascharacterized at that time as the crime of the century. Loeb\'s family retained Clarence Darrow astheir defense counsel. This case was thesource material for film, theatre and books.

The Scopes Trial was the State of Tennessee v. John ThomasScopes. Scopes a substitute high schoolteacher accused of unlawfully teaching human evolution in a state of Tennesseefunded school. William Jennings Bryanargued for the prosecution and Clarence Darrow represented the defendantScopes. This trial drew intense nationalpublicity, in part due to the big name lawyers representing each side. William Jennings Bryan was a three timeDemocratic presidential candidate (lost all three times) and a former USSecretary of State.
