Chinese craftsmen mastered the technique during theMing dynasty ( 1426-1435 ). Japanese craftsmen began to produce cloisonne inquantity during the 1800s. Pre-1800 examples of Japanese cloisonne are extremely rare.Fine examples of oriental cloisonne are represented in the Smithsonian collectionsat the National Museum of American History, the National Museum of Natural Historyand the Arts & Industries Building.
