33\" Cloisonne Walking Stick, from the Smithsonian Institution.Cloisonne means cell or partition.The decorative technique of cloisonne begins with hand designedwire strips soldered onto a metal base object.Each partition is hand painted with various colors of enamel.This art form was introduced into China from Persia and Arabia duringthe Yuan dynasty ( 1277-1386 ). Chinese craftsmen mastered the technique during theMing dynasty ( 1426-1435 ). Japanese craftsmen began to produce cloisonne inquantity during the 1800s. Pre-1800 examples of Japanese cloisonne are extremely rare.Fine examples of oriental cloisonne are represented in the Smithsonian collectionsat the National Museum of American History, the National Museum of Natural Historyand the Arts & Industries Building.
