This is a wonderful collection of 50 antique mid 19th century Roman or Greek Grand Tour plaster intaglios or cameos. They are beautifully displayed in a great looking early deep frame.

The frame measures 14 1/2 inches tall by 10 inches wide by 2 inches deep (36.8 cm x 25.4 cm x 5.1 cm).

According to my research, these were probably part of a book collection with different intaglios. The numbers on the bottom of each would relate to the actual scene and give a description. However, I don\'t have the lists. Each intaglio is numbered on the bottom though, 201 to 250.

I believe this collection dates from the early to mid 19th century, circa 1820s to 1830s.

These are definitely not reproductions. They are authentic.

They mostly depict classical and mythical images.

I\'m pretty sure they\'re Italian. From what I understand, they were was sold in Italy as a souvenir for wealthy Americans traveling their \"European Grand Tour\". Since there were no photographs, these served as reminders of the trip.

At the top of the collection it says MANIERA MODERNA.

Each intaglio is surrounded by a gold gilt painted band. Each is then mounted and numbered on the lower part of its band.

A few of them have some light damage. In row one, numbers five and six have light cracks. (These numbers refer to their place in the row, not the number on the bottom). In row three, the second and third ones have some nicks to their hair. In row four, number four, the largest, has a light nick on the top and the bottom. In row five, the second one has some tiny nicks to it. There are a few other scattered tiny nicks. Each of them is also a little dirty, with either dust or some type of age related dark marks. Please look closely at the photos.

I believe the frame is made of mahogany, with a double inlay going through it. It is chipped in the top right corner interior on the top and around the side (please see close-up photo). It has age related nicks, scratches and scuff marks on it, but this all just tends to blend in with its wonderful old patina.

The dark blue paper they are attached to is torn along the top and the bottom.

The back was loose so I took the few nails out in order to photograph it.

The detail on these intaglios is truly exceptional.

As a collection, they really make a statement in this beautiful old frame.

The entire piece weighs 3 pounds 12 1/2 ounces (1.714 kg).
