There was a problem: the gorgeous mother had produced a hideous child, the ugliest child imaginable. William Randolph Hearst, publisher of The New York American, was very fond of poaching successful comic strips from rival newspapers & he wasted no time inviting McManus to join his staff & in 1912 McManus left the World to join the American.  McManus continued The Newlyweds strip under a new name - Their Only Child - since creators were allowed to take their characters with them if they changed the name of the strip. In 1913 McManus began the comic strip that would bring him national fame & make him a very wealthy man – Bringing Up Father. Collectors often refer to the strip as if it was named for its lead characters, Maggie & Jiggs. The strip ran for 87 years. At various times during its long run Their Only Child ran as a “topper” to Bringing Up Father. A “topper” was a short comic strip that appeared on Sundays above the main feature. McManus once had a character climb down from the topper & enter the 1st panel of the Sunday featured strip where he would remain for many years. At some point McManus lost interest in Their Only Child & it fell by the wayside in 1916 allowing him to concentrate on the hugely successful Bringing Up Father. 25 years later (1941) McManus brought back Their Only Child now renamed Snookums & it continued until 1956 as a topper only. His looks never improved & Snookums remained the ugliest child in America.Merchandising of Snookums was limited with the largest number of collectibles being produced by the German maker of decorative figurines & high quality porcelain, Schafer Vater. There were also some books of comic strip reprints, a few dolls & at least 3 different hand painted tin wind-up toys made in Germany circa 1915. In 1910 Sears Roebuck began importing & distributing the Schafer Vater line in the US. It is likely that the Snookums figures were some of the first Schafer Vater pieces available. The company also produced an even more successful line of character figurines, the Rose O\'Neil Kewpies, beginning in 1912. The Schafer Vater figures that I have for sale on represent a small part of the total production.SECOND, THE IMPORTANT PLEASE READ.
