WHello and welcome!

Thank you for visiting my site.

Tuscany Book offers

A very fine early volume of one of the most famous publications on Botany appearing first on February 1, 1786 and still published today.

Curtis, W.

The Botanical Magazine; or, Flower-Garden Displayed: in which the most Ornamental Foreign Plants, cultivated in the Open Ground, the Green-House, and the Stove, will be accurately represented in their natural Colours...

London: Curtis, 1804

94 hand colored engravings, two of which are double- paged, and 94 leaves with the descriptive text.

(As is often the case, two volumes are combined in one volume. At the beginning of this monumental publication 3 engravings were published each month so that an entire year had 36 engravings. The monthly issues were sold in paper wraps and collected until there were enough issues for one book.) This volume varies, because in most months more than three engravings were published. The first engraving in this book is dated November 1,1803 and has the number 693; the last one is dated October 1 and has the number 786,

Size of the book: ca. 9.5”x 6\" (235 mm x 150 mm).

Condition: Contemporary half leather binding with marbled boards in good condition with merely the marbling and the edges showing minor evidence of wear and storage. The engravings are in exceptionally nice condition, with occasional soiling staining or spotting, original paper flaws or impurities, etc. Of the many Curtis volumes that I have handled in over 40 years, this volume is certainly one of the cleanest and best preserved.

The paper is uniform in color even though the photographs might show dark areas. That happened because the lighting conditions were not the best and you can say the skills of the person taking the photographs were likewise not the best.

Pictured: Representative engravings, the binding and the first title page.
