On October 31, 1860, in his Kentucky home, one day after Major Fitz John Porter at Gen. Winfield Scott’s headquarters telegraphed Brevet Major General Albert Sidney Johnston, offering him the command of the Department of California, which he accepted, Johnston notifies the Paymaster of the U.S. Army in New York City that he has transferred his pay accounts to the Bank of Kentucky. Leaving with his family for California by ship from New York via the isthmus of Panama to San Francisco, Johnston took command in January 1861, resigned from the U.S. Army in early May, and was appointed a Confederate General.

U.S. Army Brevet Brigadier General Albert Sidney Johnston was with his family at his home in Kentucky, where he was born, when he received an offer from by telegraph from Major Fitz John Porter at Gen. Winfield Scott’s headquarters, dated October 30, 1860, to become commander of the Department of California, succeeding Bvt. Brig. Gen. Newman S. Clarke who had died on October 17, 1860.Johnston accepted and on November 2, 1860, Gen. H.L. Scott requested Secretary of War John B. Floyd to appoint Johnston to the California command. Johnston went to Washington, D.C., where he was offered the command of the new Department of the Pacific, uniting the commands of California and Oregon, headquartered at San Francisco, and he accepted. He returned to Kentucky and prepared to go, with his family, to California. The Johnstons sailed from New York for San Francisco, via the isthmus of Panama, on December 21, 1860, and took command in January.Albert Sidney Johnston had already an eventful military career. He fought in the Black Hawk War, the Texas Revolution, and the Mexican War, and in actions against the Mormons in Utah and Indians in northern Texas.
Johnston was opposed to secession but after he heard that his adopted state of Texas had seceded on March 2, 1861, he resigned his U.S. Army commission in early May. In August, Confederate President Jefferson Davis appointed, as General in the Army of the Confederate States, “Albert S. Johnston, to date from 30th May, 1861.” On April 6, 1862, Gen. Johnston was killed at the Battle of Shiloh, the highest-ranking officer, Union or Confederate, killed during the entire war.
