CSA Lt. C L Comfort 11th La. Infantry-Collection-Lg Tintype-War Diary-Letters/Documents

Offered is an incredible personal collection belonging to Charles L. Comfort Lieutenant 11th Regt. Louisiana Infantry. My research has found that Comfort enlisted 8/1/1861 into “I” Co. LA 11th Infantry and had an amazing history as a Confederate soldier. He was captured 6/12/63 at Port Hudson Mississippi, but escaped from the Union Ship Maple Leaf while in transit to a POW camp on 6/30/1863. He fought during the Wilderness Campaign in 1864 and was captured again 11/16/1864 at Liberty Mississippi 11/16/64. He was exchanged on 3/15 and returned to his regiment. The following makes up this really rare collection:

  1. Original large tintype measuring approx. 6 ½ x 8 ½ inches picturing Comfort in bust pose and in uniform. No major scratches, just normal marks and slight wavy –ness in the tin, overall very good image.
  2. There are two pre-war items: A East Feliciana La. 1859 receipt 3 x 7. A one page letter to him 8 x 10 Philadelphia 9/4/51 inviting him to join the Legion of Honor. There is a post war telegram 1881 notifying him that his father has died.

The following are all of the Civil War dated material.

  1. Handwritten note Chattanooga Aug. 23 1863 3x5 Directing the Conductor of the W & A RR to pass Comfort to complete “special Telegraph duty.”
  2. Handwritten receipt Nov. 5 Liberty for $1000 Confederate money found on Comfort. ( Most likely written when captured).
  3. Handwritten on classic CSA blue paper 8 x 14 March 2, 1864- Received this 2nd day of March 1864 of Lieut. CL Comfort Commanding Outpost at Monticello the following Ordnance and Ordnance Stores 12 Austrian Rifles. Signed BT Burnet Capt Commanding 9th La. Battn. These Arms were transferred to Capt. BF Burnett 9th La. Batt to enable him to proceed safely across the Country to Parole Camp with a detachment of Twenty Five unarmed men of which he had command.
  4. An 8 x 10 on classic CSA blue paper Special Orders Office Commandant Conscripts Mississippi April 22, 1865 signed by Brig Gen Brandon.
  5. CSA document 5 x 8 Pay Office to Comfort payment from Dec. 1 1863 to March 31st 1864-$340.
  6. Handwritten document 4 x 6 on brown lined paper received April 22, 1865 of Lt. Chas Comfort two hundred dollars ($200) loaned on a/c.
  7. Document District of the Gulf Headquarters Military Post March 9th 1865 Lieut C.L. Comfort Co. I 11th La. Regt. Will rejoin his command without delay at Liberty La. The document is taped to another piece of paper due to its condition.
  8. Finally included is what is left of the diary he carried throughout the Civil War. It is in terrible condition, and the pages are removed torn, ripped irregular shape BUT still contains a lot of written material. The leather cover is folded and written on it is, “This book was carried throughout the Civil War C L Comfort 11th La. CSA. Pages from the diary written in pencil that can be read include: envelop with his name; page with list of expenses and amount; page with signature Lt. Dorsey Pensylvania (sic) Regt. 154th Tenn “Hickory Rifles” Capt. Donaldson Above on board Steam Maple Leaf captured; page with signature of Col. Virgil S. Murphy; page written in ink, Captured at Liberty Amite Co. Miss. Nov. 16th 1864 by 2nd Ill Cav. Lt. Marsh Commdg. Genl Lee to Raid US Military Prison No. 4 Picayune Cotton Press New Orleans Dec. 3rd 1864; page with a poem titled Lorena; plus other pages with misc. writing.

This is a very rare historical collection from a Confederate soldier who fought gallantly during the Civil War. Comes with all my research material.
