DATED 1860 BRITISH LONDON STERLING SILVER SALVER DISH SERVING TRAY 17 TOZ No Res
This listing is a very nice dated 1860 English Rococo Style sterling silver salver tray. The salver measures 10 ¼ inches or 26 cm in diameter, and weighs 17.08 troy ounces or 530.2 grams.
The salver has a beautiful scalloped edge with a high relief scrolling design. The center of the tray is engraved with a fine line design. The tray sits on scrolled feet with floral design. The back of the tray is marked with the standard British hallmarks; the leopard mark for London, the sterling standard mark of the lion, the date letter “E” for 1860, and the Queen Victoria I duty mark which was used from 1838-1890.
A salver is a flat tray of silver used for carrying or serving glasses, cups and dishes at table or for the presenting of a letter or card by a servant. In a royal or noble household the fear of poisoning led to the custom of tasting the food or drink before it was served to the master and his guests; this was known as the assay of meat and drink.
The salver is in very good condition. The only part of the tray which is not antique is the engraving at the center which is dated 1983. Please see the many photographs.
