Where Abraham Lincoln Finished theGettysburg Address.
The David Wills house was built in 1816 on theSquare in Gettysburg, PA.
David Wills was one of Gettysburg’s most prominentcitizens and played an
important role in the battle’s aftermath. He alsowas instrumental
in creating the Soldiers’ National Cemetery. Hishome is where Abraham
Lincoln stayed and penned his final draft of theGettysburg Address
on the night of Nov. 18, 1863. Now owned by theNational
Park Service, the historic home was renovated andre-opened in
2009. The building was restored to the appearance ithad when
President Lincoln was the guest of honor in 1863.
This piece of wood was removed from an original beamduring
the restoration process.
The original beam is now in the possession of theGettysburg Museum of History.
The first image on shows the display card withthe actual small piece wood attached below the image of David Wills house as itlooked in 1890. A small image of a portion of the original beam is on the lowerright.
The actual piece of wood is about 7/8 inch long and is mounted on a 5 x 7 inch descriptiveCOA display that can easily be framed. Each piece of wood will vary slightlydepending on how it was cut from the original larger piece. The display isprotected by a stiff plastic protector.
Thiswould look great matted and framed and would make a very special gift foranyone with an interest in Civil War history!
