This is a most exquisite locket of superb quality, amongst the very finest examples we have ever listed.
It dates from around 1890, a genuine Victorian heirloom piece.
It is fully tested for HIGH carat gold, 18ct, (750/1000 purity), and it is beautifully decorated to BOTH sides with ornate, elaborate, stylised scrolling chasing and engraving work.
NB: This is solid, high carat GOLD, NOT just a \'Front & Back\' locket.
To the front is rich, sky BLUE enamelled cross, signifying this to have been intended to be a mourning or memorial piece.
This measures a GOOD sized3.2 cmslong, (including the solid gold bale) by2 cmsdiameter.
It weighs a hefty, solid7 grams,0.247ounces, including its chain.
It opens to reveal compartments, suitable for storing and displaying photographs, locks of hair or other such personal keepsakes. It is all complete with retaining rims and glazed protective panels to both sides.
ONE of the rims to the compartments is yellow metal and is NOT solid gold, although this is almost certainly original.
It is fitted on an antique, perhaps PERIOD robust, 15ct solid gold chain, embossed \'15\'. It measures 17.75 inches long.
This is in a VERY good, original condition, free from dents or dings and the wonderful enamel intact and free from damage; the hinge and clasp are sound and secure.
It is amongst the finest antique lockets of its kind you will find.
