Original Art Nouveau, Belle Epoque jewels are so very hard to find and here we have one of the most beautiful pieces. The design work is of the highest quality. The fully modeled dragonfly insect is delicate and alive and full of the romance of the Art Nouveau period which celebrated the wonders of nature. And this one is set with Demantoid Garnets - what a dream. These green demantoids sparkle with incredible fire and are just the perfect green that we all look for! The demantoids are from Russia and the piece is very likely Russian. The body and eyes are also set with red garnets. The wings with pearls. The wings have beautiful Art Nouveau engraving on them and the legs an engraved design. The piece is hallmarked 800 for 800 silver and it has a gold wash over the silver. The jewel dates to c1880-1920. And insect jewels are the epitome of fashion today - look at the photos of the recent magazine issue of Veranda I have included with the prices!
In a fine antique jewelry store this would be approximately $3,500!
The brooch is in excellent period condition. There is no damage to the jewels. It has its original C-clasp. It could easily be converted to a pendant if desired. The dragonfly is 30 mm tall and 27 mm wide. It weighs 3.0 grams.
