A delegate to the Democratic conventionin Charleston in 1860, he worked to avert the disruption of the Northern andSouthern wings; failing that, he attended the Southern Democratic convention inBaltimore, which nominated John C. Breckinridge for President.

Although a pessimist about the prospectsof Southern secession, he was a delegate to the Louisiana secession convention.After the outbreak of war in 1861, he first attached himself to the staff ofGeneral Braxton Bragg at Pensacola, then accepted a commission from thegovernor of Louisiana as colonel of the Ninth Louisiana Infantry Regiment andwas sent to the Virginia front. He commanded the Louisiana Brigade under“Stonewall” Jackson in the 1862 campaigns in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia.Afterwards he was transferred to the Trans-Mississippi Department, where he ledoutnumbered Confederate forces to victories in the Red River Campaign. In thewaning days of the war he was transferred to command in Alabama andMississippi, surrendering only after the surrenders of Lee and Johnson and thecapture of Jefferson Davis.

Book is in fine condition in a very gooddust jacket. Binding is nice and tight, with clean, unmarked pages. Dust jackethas some moderate wear, with some small tears and chipping to head and tail ofspine. Not price-clipped ($7.50), no remainder mark, not ex-library. Anexcellent copy of a classic Civil War memoir.
