Dionysis / Bacchus necklace amulet - Greek / Roman god of wine
Dionysis / Bacchus necklace
Dimensions - Height - 2.5 cm / 1 inch
Width - 2.2 cm 7/8 inch
This fine necklace subject features the unmistakable image of the god Dionysis otherwise known as Bacchus. One of the most popular gods of the Greco - Roman world he symbolised libertation of the senses from the constraints of society. This was achieved through the ritual consumption of copius portions of wine when patrons would seek to invoke the free spirit of the god, thus allowing debauchery and light hearted activities to flourish.
The amulet featured on this necklace shows Dionysis the elder complete with grapes and vine leaves amidst his hair. It has anagedochrecolouration and is threaded on a strand of plaited leather with silver clasps. Made of Temstone which is a limestone Quartzite composition stone, it can be polished with a dry cloth to create highlights.
*Another interesting story relating to Dionysis can be found in my description of the Dolphin boy sculpture if it is still in the shop at present.
