Ferdinand Levillian was born in 1837 and died in 1905. Hestudied under the sculpture Jouffroy (1806-1882) and made his debut at theSalon in 1862 where he exhibited regularly until 1903.

In 1871 he established collaboration with renowned foundryowner Ferdinand Barbedienne. There they produced lamps, coupes and amphora inthe Neo-Classic style which was Levillain’s specialty. He also collaboratedwith Sevres and created medallions and medals many of which can be seen todayon The Louvre, Musee d’Orsay and the Musee des Beaux Arts in Angers.

This work, from the last quarter of the 19thcentury showcases the artist’s precise and fluid technique. It was wonderfullycast in bronze with a dore gold patina. A vine with pedals and fruit in lowrelief intertwine across the front and back of the cup. There are two grotesqueheads which flank the sides under the stem handles which organically integratesthe whole work.

The coupe measures 5 1/2\" handle to handle, with a base of 2 3/4\" square and an overall height of 6\". Condition is very good, with some very minor nicks to the edge of the marble base consistent with age.
