This is an original early 1800s pewter inkwell for a quill pen...it has quill pen hole and ink hole in top.....thick heavy pewter. someone has scratched the initials H C into side.....1799 on bottom....1 1/2\"tall x 1 3/4\"round at base....tapers up to smaller flat shoulder....Excellent condition with only some scratches. I doubt if the date is original as the scratched lines appear too shiny. Great provenance though, as the museum i.d. number is from The Strong Museum of Rochester, NY. We acquired this early inkwell from the sale house that was commissioned by The Strong to sell some of their deaccessioned artifacts in order to raise funds for future purchases.
