$299.95

For sale is an early 20th century African brass/bronze castreplication ofIyobathe Queen-Mother of theEdo people of Benin, Nigeria.

The extraordinary bronzes of the Benin kingdom in what is now Nigeria exhibit a virtuosity and sophistication of style that has astonished the Western world since they were visited in the 15th Century. Commemorative heads, which were cast in bronze, adorned the shrines dedicated to the ancestors of the Oba of Benin. This mask was made from the lost wax process. These heads are idealized representations of Benin rulers rather than individualized portraits of the deceased. Their work was brought to Europe following a punitive expedition by the British in 1897, causing a great sensation.

The people of Benin, called Bini, are descended from the Ife, also known for their remarkable bronzes. Almost all Benin art was created to honor the king , or Oba, who has reigned, with his ancestors, from the 15th century. Heads that do not depict the king show members of his court or the Queen.Styles have changed somewhat over the years but there are certain defining characteristics, such as the staring eyes, broad nose, full lips, & fleshy cheeks all of which are present in this example . Although similar to many older works, this is anearly 20th C. piece. This pieceissculpted by hand, then cast in bronze by the lost wax process.

It is 12 inches tall and weighs 187 grams or 4 lbs 1.7 oz. The sculpture has a detailed design and a wonderful verdigris patination. It is in great condition for its age and you can view the photos for more information. This piece comes from the estate of a long time African collector/dealer andwould make a great addition to any African art collection. Signature is requiredfor delivery.
