EARLY 19TH CENTURY MOTIF & ALPHABET SAMPLER BY CHARLOTTE DAVIS - c.1840:

Early 19th century linen and silk work sampler by Charlotte Davis - 7 Sept 18**. Although the last two digits of the date are missing, the style of stitch work would indicate this piece dates to c.1840. This sampler is completely charming with fine quality stitch work throughout. The top section of the linen is stitched with rows of alphabet letters, numbers and border patterns, whilst the middle section is stitched with a central tree flanked by birds, deer, trees, crowns, diamonds and dogs. This is then underlined with a deep row of tree motifs. The bottom section of the linen is stitched at the centre with a pair of fruit baskets flanked by a blue bird, flower motif and flower basket. There are three crowns above the fruit baskets and Charlotte\'s details below with a flower motif at each end. The whole thing is then surrounded by a narrow meandering border.The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, with a darker smudge through the last letters of Charlotte\'s first name. This part of the linen also has an old repair through the OTT. The colours of the silks are good. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Charlotte first stitched it. This photograph also shows remnants of old glue and paper around the edges of the linen where the sampler has been glued down at some point of time. There are also some areas of damage to both the edges and the field of the linen. I\'ve photographed the sampler on a white background to highlight this but once on a similar coloured backing, the damage to the field would be less noticeable. Measures 13\" across x 12 1/2 \"
