EARLY 19TH CENTURY POSSIBLY SCOTTISH SAMPLER BY CHRISTIAN SMITH c.1830:

Early 19th century, possibly Scottish, linen and wool work sampler by Christian Smith aged 14. Though undated, the style of stitch work would indicate this piece dates to c.1830 or slightly earlier. This sampler is completely charming. The top half of the linen is stitched with rows of alphabet letters, numbers and border patterns with four rows of family initials in and amongst and finished off with a strawberry border. Beneath the strawberry border is a central tree motif with flowers on each side, followed by a row of two pairs of birds with three crowns between them. Below the birds is a floral urn with a tree motif by its side and the initials \"WE\" in between. The bottom edge of the linen has Christian\'s name and age of 14 with a row of dogs above.The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age and the colours of the wool are very good with the odd stitch missing here and there. The last photo is of the reverse of the samplers and indicates how the colours would have looked when Christian first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, there are a few small areas of damage to the linen, the biggest being by the bottom left side floral urn. I\'ve photographed the sampler on a white background to highlight this but once on a similar coloured backing the damage would be a lot less noticeable. Measures 8\" x 17\"
