EARLY/MID 19TH CENTURY MOTIF & QUOTATION SAMPLER BY MARY ANN BURTON AGED 8 c1845:

Early/mid 19th century linen and silk work sampler by Mary Ann Burton aged 8. Though the date is seemingly missing, the style of stitch work would indicate this piece dates to c.1845 or slightly earlier. This sampler is just stunning with fine quality stitch work throughout, the moreso when one considers Mary Ann was just eight years old when she finished it. The top section of the linen is stitched with the following biblical quotation which has a bird on each side
Favour is deceitful and beauty is vain, but the woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praisedGive her of the fruit of her hands and let her own works praise her in the gatesProverbs XXX1 & verses 30:31
The middle section of the linen is stitched with a central flower basket flanked by birds and flowers. To the left side is a tiny golden house with a black windmill above, whilst to the right side is a tree. The bottom section of the linen is stitched at the centre with Mary Ann\'s name and age with a lion above and a bird standing on a blossom branch to the left and right. The whole thing is then surrounded by a deep rose border.The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, darker around the edges and slightly grubby in places where it looks as though the sampler has been behind broken glass for many years. The colours of the silks are good with the odd stitch missing here and there. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Mary Ann first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, there are areas of damage to both the edges and the field of the linen, the largest being by Mary Ann\'s name. Some of the damage around the edges has resulted in a small amount of stitch loss. Measures 12 3/4 \" x 12 1/4 \"
