Easter ISLAND KNEELING MOAI, a rock carving we obtained on Easter Island in 1973, weighs 1 pound 3 ounces, measures 3 inches wide at the ears, 2.5 inches wide at the base, and is 6.5 inches tall. The moai is in its original, pristine condition, having no stains, chips, dents, or scratches. It was carved circa 1972 from local volcanic rock for sale to tourists. The volcanic rock is a type of pumice, which is easy to carve but must be handled somewhat carefully. The date 1973 is seen on the base of a large wooden moai we collected on the same trip (see photo). The photo of Easter Islanders in small boats was taken in February,1970 aboard the NOAA vessel, Oceanographer, during a stop for medical emergency. The islanders traded carvings for blue jeans and other hard to obtain items. The original, full size kneeling moai statue, the only one of its kind on Easter Island, was unearthed by Thor Heyerdahl in 1955 on the slopes of Rano Raraku volcano, the statue quarry.
