MYSTERY AND

IMAGINATION

~~~~ **** ~~~~
This sale is for an original 1923 FIRST EDITION,THUS of "TALES OF MYSTERY AND IMAGINATION" by Edgar Allan Poe,
as illustrated by HENRY CLARKE.
This LIMITED EDITION is very elusive as it was limited to
ONLY 2,500 COPIES PRINTED.
Tales of Mystery and Imagination is a popular title for works of the American author, essayist and poet Edgar Allan Poe and was the first complete collection of his works specifically restricting itself to his suspenseful and related tales. Poe's works received their widest audience posthumously. The title and compilation of Tales of Mystery and Imagination became a vehicle for delivering Poe's works to a wide readership since the first publication using this name in 1908.
The elements in certain tales are stories of the supernatural, of revenge, near-death experiences and some of the very first detective stories. In William Wilson a man is haunted in a strange way. In the Gold-Bug is a search for buried treasure. The Fall of The House of Usher has some very strange happenings. The Red Death happens in another house. In The Cask of Amontillado a death brings revenge. In The Pit and the Pendulum a suffering man looks forward to death. You can look for a mystery voice in The Murders in the Rue Morgue. Two families in Metzengerstein suffer deaths of men and their horses. 'The Black Cat' is appealing for its use of mystery and foreboding that takes us to a horrifying climax. These are some of the few classics you will find within these pages, accompanied by the wonderful artist illustrations by HARRY CLARKE.
Poe's stories are remarkable for their inventiveness, their fine construction, their vivid descriptions and their psychological insight. Since their first publication, Poe's powerful stories have captured the imagination of generations of readers. Many of the stories have been made into films or television dramas or they have been the source of inspiration for countless adaptations.
During Poe's lifetime a collection of his strange tales was published in 1839 but this did not include some highly regarded tales which were written by him later. This collection was modified by Padric Colum in 1908 in view of the growing reputation of Poe's taste for suspense, especially in the context of what his French critic M. Brunetiere called events "on the margin" of life. This prompted Padric Colum, the Editor of the 1908 London edition, to modify this collection to "Tales of Mystery and Imagination". The original collection, in keeping with its title, deliberately excluded Poe's poems, comedies and essays. The title of the 1908 book together with its formula of compiling Poe's most bewildering tales into a single volume continues to be used by innumerable publishers.
In 1919 London's George Harrap & Co. published a handsome edition illustrated by Harry Clarke, albeit in black and white. In 1923 an expanded edition was released with many more illustrations, including EIGHT TIPPED INCOLOR PLATES and more than 24 MONOTONE IMAGES. This book is the works reflected here. This work catapulted Clarke into his reputation as a book illustrator (this was during the golden age of gift-book illustration in the first quarter of the twentieth century).The nature of the illustrations associated the tales with the supernatural and macabre.
However, not all the tales are obviously about the supernatural, for example The Gold-Bug or The Elk.
