Inscribed Steatite Scarab

Finely carved naturalistic scarab inscribed base. V notches on elytra from the girdle. Pierced laterally for suspension. Hieroglyph inscription on bottom featuring the cartouche of Tuthmosis III -- Men-khepher-Ra with an oval frame. Intact as pictured--loss at upper bottom. Inscription also features a Sphinx in profile right wearing beard and a uraeus; with Sun disc (Ra) above and nefer (beauty) to the right.

Tuthmosis III reigned nearly fifty-four years (including circa twenty as co-regent with his mother Hathsepsut). Through seventeen military campaigns he expanded the lands under Egyptian dominion to create the largest empire Egypt had ever seen, conquering much of the Near East up to the Euphrates to the east and Nubia to the south. Due to this hectic expansionistic activity the American archeologist J. H. breasted called him the “Napoleon of Egypt”.
