ITEM DESCRIPTION: Here is an Absolutely Gorgeous Vintage circa early 1900’s-10\'s Hand Colored Bromide (Photo-mechanical) Print titled “The Graduate”, by the listed artist ‘Edwin Howland Blashfield’ (American, 1848-1936), whose signature does not appear on the piece. The original lunette mural was painted in 1907-08, and adorns the wall on the Great Hall of Shepard Hall, in the City University of New York, and was done in oil on canvas and is huge with the size of 22’ x 43’ 11”. A detailed description of the piece is below. The Print is on a nice heavier wove photo stock (smoother frontside), and is in Excellent Rare+ condition for its age with No Color Fade! The title does not appear on the piece either. ‘Copyright (in circle) H.K.T.’, as appears printed lower left in the image area. ‘EHR’, as appears hand-written upside down on the back in pink pencil, which is more than likely the Meibohm family’s distributor/inventory letters. This Print has been tucked away in our archive amongst other prints & lithos since it was purchased by the Meibohm family and hasn’t seen the light of day in all this time-it’s as beautiful as the day it was printed. Print size is 20-3/8\" x 36.5\", Image size is 18-7/8\" x 35.5\". There are still tack holes in the corners from where the ‘Tinter’ secured it to their board to hand color the piece. You can also see the ink smears beyond the image areas where they applied the ink, and never trimmed down for resale. Minimal edge wear. No Tears and No Foxing. Slight creasing in outer margin areas and upper margin corners. No real damage at all in the image area with the exception of very minimal creasing which isn’t even noticeable. Some normal toning of stock from age. Slight topical soiling (lightly grubby) from age and from being in a drawer this whole time amongst other prints and lithos. This will look beautiful framed up! This gorgeous vintage hand colored bromide photo print has never been framed which is always more desirable to collectors since it has never been exposed to older non-archival materials, matburn or lightfade.Detailed description of The Graduate, from the Board of Trustees application to the Art Commission (1908): In the centre in College gown, the Graduate having just lighted his torch at the altar of learning, is about to start on his voyage of life. At his side, Alma Mater wearing the Phrygion Cap of Liberty and having a shield with the Coat of Arms of the College, points upward at a colossal seated statue of Wisdom (holding the Earth in her hands). Seated in semi-circle on either side of Wisdom are ten female figures typifying great Universities or educational centres of the past. Proceeding from left to right, they are Alexandria, Rome, Cordova, Bologna, Athens, Upsala, Leyden, Paris, Heidelberg, Oxford. Below these are seated male figures suggesting some of the great subdivisions of the Sciences and Arts. Again from left to right, they are Lavoisier (for Chemistry), Democritus (for Philosophy), Harvey (for Medicine), Augustus Caesar (for Law), Sir Isaac Newton (for Mathematics, for Physics), Shakespeare (for poetical Literature), Beethoven (for Music), Michelangelo (for Art), Petrarch (for Humane Letters), Galileo (for Astronomy). At the right of Alma Mater stands a female figure of Discipline waiting to accompany the Graduate and to prepare him for the Battle of Life with the Scourge for himself and the Sword for others. Below and in the foreground are, at the left, the people, the Aspirants, men of all classes. At the right are the students with gown and cap or in their costumes of football or baseball team. In the upper part of the decoration at right and left of the head of Wisdom and riding upon the smoke clouds from the altar are two groups of children holding, respectively, at left an open volume, at right a glass retort, as symbolizing the two great divisions of education: education by the printed page and education by experiment.
