Listed this week is an amazing estate collection...a large variety of very old and rare pocket watches, mostly with beautiful Verge Fusee movements of the Georgian Era

Up for sale is aEARLY ANTIQUE \'ROSE & SON’, VERGE FUSEE MOVEMENT, STERLING SILVER, \'PAIR CASE\' POCKET WATCH.

The key wind and set pocket watch does not run. It appears that the chain is either broken or detached and needs repair or replacing. The balance wheel does spin freely on prompt.

These watches are all fresh from an estate collection, so to be safe for the sale, we always assume they may need a good cleaning or servicing to be keeping in full working order.

As shown in the photos, the fabulous early English Verge Fusee pocket watch has a large convex white enamel dial with a number of fine hairlines and slight marks/scuffs.The face is marked“Rose & Son, London” and has bold black Arabic Numbers overset with numbers to 60, in five minute increments (although worn…) and what appears to be the original hands in the Spade and Whip design.

The watch case, I believe, is Sterling Silver, although not hallmarked as such. It has wear, and shows no underlying metal, like brass or copper, as it would if it were plated.

It is a“Pair Case”, which has an inner case that holds the actual movement and an outer case which encloses and protects the inner case. Since the inner case couldn’t be made dustproof because of the key-holes for winding or setting, the outer case provided additional protection from dust and dirt.

The outer case is plain in design as the pictures show. It is with quite a

few dints and bruises that would be expected from a watch this age that has had a good deal of use. The hinged front‘bezel’has had quite a bit of repair near the inner hinge (soldering) as shown in the pictures, but still closes nicely and cannot be seen once closed. The damage/repair also shows to the outside near the case hinge. The outer case in unmarked.

The inner case is, I believe, also sterling silver and without markings…although there is some hallmark/stamp on the inside that has been‘double-stamped’ and is unreadable.The hinged front bezel holds a‘Dome crystal\',innice condition, although a bit cloudy and may need buffing. The bezel closes tightly as it should.

The large swing-out Verge Fusee gilt movement is in nice condition and as stated is presently not running.

It has a finely decorated and engraved movemnt and beautifully pierced Balance Cock . It is marked“Rose & Son, London”.

The inner and outer cases appear matched and fit together very nicely.

The pocket watch has an overall measurement of approximately 58mm with the inner case being about 51mm wide and 22mm thick. The dial measures about 48mm in diameter.

This is a fine early Georgian Verge Fusee pocket watch.
