Shackleton has listed the ships on which he made his Antarctic voyages: \"\'Discovery\' August 1901 - June 1903/\'Nimrod\' August 1907 - June 1909/\'Endurance\' August 1914 - Oct. 27th 1916/\'Aurora\' December 1916 - Feb. 9th 1917/Lectured Sandringham Oct. 10th 1917\". British maritime explorer Ernest Shackleton (1874-1922) was aboard Robert Scott\'s vessel Discovery on an expedition to Antarctica, but was forced by ill health to return home. Undeterred, he sailed aboard the Nimrod to the coast of Antarctica, and then, journeying inland with two companions, discovered the Magnetic South Pole and ventured closer to the geographic South Pole than any prior explorer. For this he was knighted in 1909. Shackleton\'s greatest claim to fame was as commander of the Endurance, a ship crushed by ice in the Ross Sea, stranding his crew. Setting out in a small boat Shackleton and four crewmen sailed for fourteen days across stormy seas to South Georgia Island, followed by a 2-day overland trek to a whaling station, where they were able to arrange rescue of their stranded companions. The Aurora made further Antarctic explorations. These later events transpired during World War I, and Shackleton tried to volunteer for military duty, but Winston Churchill, First Lord of the Admiralty, insisted Shackleton continue his explorations instead. Sir Ernest humorously added his lecture at Sandringham, a royal estate, to this list. When he compiled this list, a final voyage aboard the Quest (1921-1922) was still in the future. Tiring of the lecture circuit, Shackleton resolved on one final voyage of exploration, hoping to circumnavigate Antarctica. He died of a heart attack on South Georgia, where his widow insisted his body be interred since his spirit resided there. For much of the 20th century, Shackleton\'s achievements were somewhat obscured by Roald Amundsen\'s success in reaching the pole, and Robert Scott\'s ill-fated attempt. Recently, however, with new books published on the Endurance saga, Shackleton\'s fame has been restored. He is now cited as a model of leadership by - among others - the U.S. Navy and the Outward Bound program. Dighton Probyn (1833-1924) earned the Victoria Cross for gallantry as a captain of the 2nd Punjab Cavalry at the Battle of Agra during the Indian Mutiny of 1857. Most notable among his many feats in battle, Probyn defended himself when was surrounded by six enemy soldiers, killing two before allies joined in the battle. He was eventually brevetted to Major General on July 25, 1870. In 1872, he was appointed to the first of many positions working for the Royal Family. As an equerry for the Prince of Wales, Probyn acted as an executive assistant of sorts, assisting him with scheduling, appointments, communications, and other various responsibilities. Only the highest British Royal Family members have equerries, and they may have up to several. After a few years serving in this position, he returned to the military, earning a number of promotions in rank for the Bengal Cavalry and the British Indian Army. In 1901, he was appointed to the position of Keeper of the Privy Purse. His job was to keep Prince Edward VII and his wife Princess Alexandra of Denmark financially solvent, a difficult and stressful position to be in. There is some evidence that the royal couple was free-spending. Sir Dighton later served as equerry to Edward after the latter\'s ascent to the throne in 1902. These autographs were probably obtained at Sandringham, a royal estate, in October 1917. Right edge ragged. Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
