Presenting a rare Coptic Ethiopian Bible/Psalm/Prayer Book w/ 16 vibrant hand painted icons, and great aging throughout...NEVER BEFORE SEEN COPTIC BIBLE WITH SO MANY ICONS
Written in the Ethiopic (Ge\'ez) script, a Semitic language that is no longer spoken, but is still used for liturgical and other religious purposes by the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. The subject of these \"Bibles\" are generally always Christian, but actual content varies. Dating Ethiopian manuscripts is very difficult as scribes copied old monastic manuscripts using the same materials as had been used for centuries, and have been as old as the 14th century; this carries many examples of what we might guess is a late 17th century to early 19th century copy, with very aged condition to the text (marginalia, some doodles, fading/waterstaining, rodent wear, etc), bound in newer carved wooden boards- a usual practice in the region. As shown with text and numerous iconic paintings, bound in chiseled hard wooden boards with sinew, thread and twine loosely tying the gatherings together as well as to the boards, as shown. The Bible presents around 5\" x 4\"; quite portable. A majority of the text are incantations to protect the owner from supernatural forces, combined with what looks to be possibly the Bible, liturgical prayers, or the Psalms. Written in red/black, as shown, the red indicating sacred words spoken by the Savior, again illustrated with featuring 16 various Bible scenes and iconic Coptic symbols in vibrant color. These Bibles usually one have 1-4 icons, having 16 is nearly unheard of. There are 45 leaves/90 or so pages in this as well.
A true treasure, these have sold for $1,000s of dollars, and is extremely rare and unique. Best of luck!!
