Presenting a handwritten Coptic Ethiopian Bible/Psalm Book w/ great aging throughout! Written in the Ethiopic (Ge\'ez) script, a Semitic language that is no longer spoken, but is still used for liturgical and other religious purposes by the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. The subject of these \"Bibles\" are generally always Christian, but actual content varies. Dating Ethiopian manuscripts is very difficult as scribes copied old monastic manuscripts using the same materials as had been used for centuries, and have been as old as the 14th century; this carries many examples of an older age within, with original vellum animal skin pages, faded, browned, stained and aged, as shown, bound in hand sewn and attached wooden boards, wrapped in an attractive stamped leather wrap. We could loosely guess this one originated sometime c1700- late 1800s, with wear to the vellum as an indicator; the leather wraps probably newer, c1850-1900s. A majority of the text are incantations to protect the owner from supernatural forces, combined with what looks to be possibly the Book of Psalms or the Bible. Written in red/black, as shown, the red indicating sacred words spoken by the savior, intermixed with 4 gorgeous handpainted icons, including one of the Lord hanging from the cross. The Bible also includes a few crudely drawn annotations and notes in front and at the rear. This example is bound in rectangular wooden boards, leather wrapped; the covers tied through with twine under a leather cover on the spine, with some stamped designs to the leather, including a central cross design. There is some definitive age to the interior of this example, and some staining, notable water damage and warping, and more, which is normal for these rare gems; this one undoubtedly hundreds of years old. There are roughly 140 leaves/280 pages in this, as shown. There is also some interesting marginalia, as shown in the pics, undoubtedly newer in origin, but again, in Ge\'ez. Obtained in an online sale direct from Ethiopia.Bible measures 7\" x 5.25\" x 2\" thick.
A True treasure, these have sold for $1,000s of dollars, and this particular copy has a true feeling of history and culture, especially with the aging, folk art wraps, icons and stained vellum, and is extremely rare and unique. Best of luck!!
