Presenting a handwritten Coptic Ethiopian Bible/Psalm Book w/ great aging throughout, the original handmade leather case and gorgeous handpainted icons! Written in the Ethiopic (Ge\'ez) script, a Semitic language that is no longer spoken, but is still used for liturgical and other religious purposes by the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. The subject of these \"Bibles\" are generally always Christian, but actual content varies. Dating Ethiopian manuscripts is very difficult as scribes copied old monastic manuscripts using the same materials as had been used for centuries, and have been as old as the 14th century; this carries many examples of an older age within, with original vellum animal skin pages, faded, browned, stained and aged, as shown with text rubbing and fading, bound in hand sewn and attached wooden boards, themselves stitched together by twine and wrapped by leather. The Bible comes with a unique leather hand made case as well, as shown. We could loosely guess the book originated sometime c1600- late 1700s, with wear to the vellum as an indicator. The icons were probably applied later on, as well as the leather wraps. The case looks to be less than 200 years old. A majority of the text are incantations to protect the owner from supernatural forces, combined with what looks to be possibly the Book of Psalms or the Bible. Written in red/black, as shown, the red indicating sacred words spoken by the savior, intermixed with 4 gorgeous handpainted icons dispersed in the text, undoubtedly contemporary with the leaves. There is some definitive age to the interior of this example, and some staining, notable water damage, chipping and such, which is normal for these rare gems; this one undoubtedly hundreds of years old. There are roughly 28 leaves/56 pages in this, as shown. Obtained in an online sale direct from Ethiopia.Bible measures 4\" x 3\" x 1.5\" thick, in case measures 5.5\" x 4.5\" x 2.5\".
A True treasure, these have sold for $1,000s of dollars, and this particular copy has a true feeling of history and culture, especially with the icons, in text drawings,handcase, and stained vellum, and is extremely rare and unique. Best of luck!!
