Presenting a Coptic Ethiopian Bible \'Magic\' Scroll!Written in the Ethiopic (Ge\'ez) script, a Semitic language that is no longer spoken, but is still used for liturgical and other religious purposes by the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. The subject of these \"Bibles/Scrolls\" are generally always Christian, but actual content varies. Dating Ethiopian manuscripts is very difficult as scribes copied old monastic manuscripts using the same materials as had been used for centuries, and have been as old as the 14th century. The scrolls more notably have held a more ancient roll, as Ge\'ez monks carried these in totes, thinking of them as Magical, often writing prayers with totem drawings for good luck and blessings; this is a great example with plenty of illustrated designs and borders. We could loosely guess this one originated sometime between 1800-1900s (based on appearance and age of vellum with visible worming present,fading and heavily worn and aged), although in many cases they turn out much, much older.Again, the majority of the text/words are incantations to protect the owner from supernatural forces, with the accompanying illustrations of various designs or figures, as well as geometric design. Written in black and red(red signifying the Creator\'s words) text, this specimen contains not only text but illustrated figure designs accompanying the text, as shown. This example is quite long, over 32\" unrolled (3.75\" wide) with hand stitched sections and aged writing, with much patina.
A True treasure, these have sold for $1,000s of dollars, and this particular copy has a true feeling of history, and is extremely rare and unique. Best of luck!!
