Here\'s a very rare stamped NC Pottery vase that we picked up this week. The mark is a bit hard to read, and was just impossible to get a good CLEAR shot of the last line in the stamp. But it IS marked with the extremely rare M.L. Owens Pottery Steeds NC 3 line stamp. Melvin Owens took over his father\'s (J.H.Owen\'s) shop sometime in the early 1940\'s, after the old man passed away. Supposedly, this was the first stamp he used on his own work, after becoming the shops Master Potter. The vase is colored in a Chinese Blue attempt glaze. Practically every shop in the area at least experimented with a Chinese Blue, attempting to cash in on the success of the glaze made famous by Ben Owen at Jugtown. North State probably had the most success with it, but most of the other shops quickly abandoned the effort, as so few pots came out anywhere even close to the desired result. This large fluted rim vase stands 9.5\" tall by 6\" across the rim. The previous owner has touched up 3 small surface rim chips. I would not call this a professional repair... but the old boy is pretty darn good at matching colors. The majority of people who would pick this vase up may very well not see them, even after being pointed out. You have to get it in good light, and at just the right angle to pick up on them. There are/were no cracks in the vase, nor any other problems. Again, the stamp is a bit hard to make due to being filled in partially by the glaze, but it IS the Steeds stamp.
