This is an absolutely exquisite antique French hand embroidered gilet waistcoat from the late 1800s/early 1900s.
A simply beautiful period confection that is all in good strong condition.The front is a medium weight fairly open weave linen that is soft and tactile. The back is smooth finer linen with the traditional back buckle and adjusting strap. the buckle reads E. Eppler.
The embroidery is very finely worked by an accomplished hand. There are trailing flower vines with butterflies in flight. The butterflies are embellished with dotted wings and all of the work is raised in silk threads.
There are two small pockets and six mother of pearl buttons.
Measurements:
Bust 36\"
Waist 34\" but this can be adjusted with the strap and buckle.
Length from back of neck to hem 21\"
I have not laundered it and have left it just as I found it.
A simply charming period gilet for any period display or project. But...ooooh la la this is VERY wearable indeed!
