This is an exquisite silk vignette from the 18th century in a 19th century decorative frame.
A wonderful decorative confection full of faded grandeur.
The silk vignette carries a central vignette of what looks like two officers holding up glass goblets in a toast.
They stand within a gilded frame topped with a shell cartouche with gilded dolphins below.
The gilded display is flanked by two delicieux hand tinted cherubs one in flight and one standing and both hold flower vines.
The silk is very fragile and if you open the frame back you can see it is mounted on old sepia parchment.
The edges of the vignette hold the remains of a gilded flower garland.
The frame itself is a 19th century gilded gesso on wood. The inner has an oyster silk backing, the original glass is all intact and the gilded edge is dark old gold with the passage of time.
The back of the frame is all in place with a strong standing leg and a hanging ring.
The outer frame measures 5.75\" x 5.75\"
The inner vignette is just under 3.5\" in diameter.
A fabulous and genuine period piece for any vieille maison.
