SUPERB KAKIEMON TOKKURI HAND PAINTED PORCELAIN PHOENIX VASE Meiji Period (1868-1912) Meiji eraKakiemon Tokkuri vase ofhighly cultivatedporcelain quality. Exquisitedetail, artfully rendered instunning hand painted polychrome enamels, representing the finest of Japanese Meiji Kakiemon ware.The superbscene wraps completely around the main body of this sublime vase:A magnificent Phoenix bird withflowing tail feathers floats above highly stylized flowers and botanicals, while in the sky smaller birds flutter about among paulownia sprays (the symbol of the empress).In Japan,the mythical Phoenix (Ho-o bird) was adopted as a symbol of the imperial household, particularly the empress. This mythical bird represents fire, the sun, and rebirth. It is said to nest only in paulownia trees. As the herald of a new age, theHo-o descends from heaven to earth to do good deeds, and then it returns to its celestial abode to await a new era. The waist of this tasteful vase is banded round with delicate vines and flowers, and the upper rim with beautiful lappet patterning. All finished with precise hand gilding. The body of the vase is of superb double gourd form with elegantly twisted lobes, creating exquisite plays of light and shadow. This is a superb example of the finery found in Japanese porcelain ware. Too much to list, see photos for all of the spectacular detail. Measures approximately 7\" high, and in excellent antique condition.
