Description:

An extremely fine 18TH CENTURY HEART Decorated Wrought Iron American Hearth or Ash Shovel, New England, Circa 1760-1780.

Great condition, untouched, uncleaned, great old grungy surface and patina. Rare form with a wonderful scrolled decorated HEART design handle with a hollow shaft with a nice shaped shovel blade. It exhibits the very earliest type of blade construction.

Great surface wear and wonderful hand forged tool marks throughout.

Most of the HEART DECORATED iron tools and utensils were usually made for a young women\'s dowry. This fact is discussed in George Neumann\'s book, \"Early American Antique Country Furnishings\" as well as in \"Wrought Iron in Winterthur\". Often the bride would have these items made for either her dowry or receive them as wedding presents. They were primarily made for show purposes and display.

The heart decorated shovels are extremely rare compared to the forks and spoons that survived.
